On Leah's day off from school she requested a return to the
butterfly garden (plus the mummy exhibit). This time she
chose a bright butterfly shirt to attract more butterflies. Not
many landed on her, but this one stayed a long time.
Our friend and family photographer, Kelly Johnsen (of Illustrations
Photography), came to visit Zoe with balloons and chocolate chip
cookies. She was also kind enough to snap a few pictures of
recovering Zoe.
The second day after surgery Zoe's eyes are crossing more, but
they're supposed to be. They claim that they'll straighten out over
the next month or so.
Feeling a little better (except when Mommy tortures her with eyedrops).
Hanging out with Mommy before the drugs.
After the Versed to make her sleepy, but before the surgery.
The surgery (to straighten her "wandering" eyes) looks like it was successful,
but it'll take weeks/months to know.
There are no post-op pictures because she was in no mood to be photographed.
She mostly screamed, tried to pull at her eyes with her splinted arms, and then
her knees when the arms didn't work. She did get a kick out of seeing double
though. The only time she smiled was when she saw 2 daddies and said, "There
are 2 daddies. Go away second daddy!"
Playing beach in front of the fire.
The only kind of swimming Zoe's allowed to do with her cast.
How do you make crazy hair for a girl with curly hair?
You straighten it. (At least as much as Mommy, a relative
flat iron novice, can straighten it.)
Then you add a "rock star pony tail," pink and blue spray, silver
glitter, and a ridiculous flower headband.
CRAZY!
Snowman building was followed by our first attempt at
snowshoeing. A fun day in multiple feet of snow!
They decided they wanted to play Darth Vaders.
It made Peter and me so proud.
Her tooth was so loose that it was kind of dangling.
She pulled it out as soon as she got to school. She got
to call me (again) giddy from the nurse's office.
A better view of the gap.
This moose lived in our condo. He was much admired.
We said a sad goodbye to Moose when we checked out.
And then Zoe got broken. (Yes, some parental guilt.)
We got the call at lunch time. She sat back on her skis
and put her hand down to catch herself. Ski patrol
brought her down (on the gondola, not on a stretcher.)
So Peter, Zoe, and I spent the afternoon at the lovely Keystone
clinic. She was a trooper as they X-rayed her and determined
she had buckle fractures in both lower arm bones at the wrist.
She chose a red cast, and the medical professionals exclaimed
that it was the smallest cast they'd ever had to make. (More
parental guilt.) Zoe and I spent the evening watching the
Super Bowl while she cheered, "Go, Pack, Go!" So she didn't
feel TOO terrible.
In the mean time, Leah did fabulously at ski school, moving out of
the little kids area and onto a green run and chair lift. Then she
headed out with Peter for evening snow tubing. That was cut short
when Leah decided it was too scary, and they joined us to watch the
game with more cheers of, "Go, Pack, Go!" (The schools should
include Packer indoctrination in their curriculum lists.)
Here we are. Can you tell which 3 like to ski and which one doesn't?
Still, Zoe said she'd stick it out for the whole day of ski school.
The resort had red wagons for toting stuff (and kids).
They were a big hit with our tote-ies.
High fives from Ripperoo the ski dog.
Leah still loved it, but Zoe declared herself done by lunchtime.
Peter got to hang out with Zoe that afternoon while I skied.
Then, the 3 ladies headed up to the snow castle at the top of the
mountain while Peter did some night skiing. It was awesome!
Crazy cold, windy, and snowy, but super fun anyway. Ice tunnels,
turrets, and slides, followed by hot chocolate with Daddy and
a warm gondola ride down.
Getting ready for their first day of ski school. Leah was terrified
and Zoe made happy "swishing through the snow" noises any
time we mentioned it.
Turns out they both felt differently after trying it. Leah loved it.
Zoe . . . not so much. I took this after being called to give her a
pep talk at the base of the mountain. She went back up after this,
but I was called to come get her an hour later. She fell asleep (after
crying) on a sled in the snow. To be fair, she was exhausted from
sharing a room with her sister the night before. I think she'd agree
that the highlight was that her helmet and goggles made her look like
Darth Vader.
